Postdoctoral Research

Postdoctoral researchers (PRs) are admitted to the program on the condition of holding a PhD or doctoral degree. PRs are admitted for two main reasons:  i) to conduct research under the supervision of a principal investigator (PR-T1), or ii) to conduct research, teach and collaborate in the Graduate Program (PR-T2). Both types of PR are usually funded.

To apply as a PR-T1, candidates must verify whether the research interests of the principal investigators (PI) linked to the program are compatible with the candidate’s own interests. If so, the candidate must contact the chosen PI directly. PR-T1 grants are awarded for 12 or 24 months. The application schedule varies, as this type of PR is funded by different institutions. The key requirements for being awarded a PR-T1 grant include a very good research proposal and a very good résumé of the PI. More information is available on the websites of the main research funders at the national level: National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq, Portuguese: Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico) and at the state level: Santa Catarina State Foundation for the Support of Research and Innovation (FAPESC, Portuguese: Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e Inovação do Estado de Santa Catarina).

Candidates can apply as a PR-T2 when a call for applications is announced on the program website. PR-T2 grants are awarded for 12 months and can be renewed every year, up to 60 months. The application schedule is highly variable because it depends on existing positions to become vacant. The key requirements for being awarded a PR-T2 grant are a résumé showcasing preliminary experience with the content of key courses to be taught in our program (e.g. statistics, R, field ecology, etc.) and a publication record on topics relevant to our lines of research (details are provided in the calls for applications). Successful PR-T2 applicants are required to have a PhD or doctoral degree recognized in Brazil and to develop a short research proposal (as well as some additional paperwork). PR-T2 are encouraged to co-supervise master’s and/or doctoral students. PR-M2 positions are funded by the National Postdoctoral Research Program (PNPD, Portuguese: Programa Nacional de Pós-Doutorado) granted by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES, Portuguese:  Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior).

To apply for the PrINT Program, foreign or Brazilian candidates with international experience must check the Prorectorate for Graduate Studies (in Portuguese: Pró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação – PROPG)’s website at https://propg.ufsc.br/cin/print/editais-print/. Calls for proposals are periodically launched on the PROPG website and are also updated on our website.
