Master’s Degree

Admission

The admission of master’s students will be carried out periodically, with the criteria defined in the admission notice approved by the program’s delegate collegiate. The admission of students to the program is conditional on their ability to provide guidance, proven by the existence of supervisors with time and financial resources available for this purpose. The program does not guarantee a scholarship to successful students.

The graduate programme may admit candidates with degrees from undergraduate courses recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC). In the case of undergraduate courses abroad, recognition of the degree must be presented to the Delegate Collegiate.

Those interested should periodically visit the program’s website to follow the launch of selection notices or obtain information from the Integrated Graduate Secretariat (SIPG) – coordenacao.sipg@contato.ufsc.br.

As of 2019, the admission notices incorporate affirmative action and socio-economic vulnerability in the classification of successful applicants and the distribution of scholarships, in line with the other UFSC selection processes.

Course structure

Once accepted onto the program, students must define the research project they wish to explore in their dissertation or thesis, in accordance with the complementary rules described in the Legislation menu; at the same time, they must choose the subjects they will take, always under the direct advice of their supervising professor.

The master’s course will have a minimum workload of 24 (twenty-four) credits, of which 12 (twelve) credits will be in compulsory subjects. Compulsory subjects are: Ecology of Communities and Ecosystems, Population Ecology, Field Ecology and Seminar I. The coordination of the Graduate Program in Ecology recommends that incoming students take, in addition to the mandatory courses, Basic Statistics, Ecology Lectures and Teaching Internships.

Students who are not enrolled in courses must register for the course Dissertation or Thesis Preparation, under penalty of dismissal from the program.

Proof of proficiency in foreign languages will be required, one of which will be for the master’s degree, as provided for in the program’s regulations, and this may occur upon first enrolment on the course or during the first academic year.

For more information, those interested should consult the Program’s Resolutions and Regulations, found in the “legislation” section of this website.
