  • SAPECO 2024

    The XIV UFSC Graduate Research Week in Ecology – SAPECO-2024 – was held on September 11, 12 and 13, 2024 in the Auditorium of the UFSC Biological Sciences Center.

    The purpose of the event was to present and evaluate 13 Master’s Projects, 11 Partial Results of Master’s students’ research and 9 Partial Results of PhD students from the UFSC Postgraduate Program in Ecology, as well as to integrate the Program’s student and teaching staff and disseminate academic production to the university community.

    After the Opening Lecture given by Program Coordinator Dr. Eduardo Giehl, the presentations began, with the participation of 24 evaluators (15 PhD professors and 9 post-doctoral students in the Program), depending on the classification of the papers according to the Program’s new Research Lines: 1. Ecology of Organisms and Populations, 2. Ecology of Communities and Ecosystems, 3. Evolutionary Ecology, Macroecology and Biogeography, 4. Human Ecology, Biodiversity Management and Conservation.

  • Nomination for the CAPES Thesis Award 2024

    The Evaluation Committee of the CAPES Thesis Award – 2024 Edition of the UFSC Graduate Program in Ecology, appointed by ORDINANCE No. 06/2024/PPGECO, OF APRIL 12, 2024, is pleased to announce the nomination of Fernanda Carolina da Silva’s thesis for this year’s award.

    Fernanda Carolina da Silva’s thesis, entitled “Spatio-Temporal Patterns and Processes of Taxonomic and Functional Diversity of Reef Fishes in a Temperature Transition Zone”, supervised by Prof. Sergio Ricardo Floeter and co-supervised by Prof. Juan Pablo Quimbayo Agreda, was recommended by the committee for its exceptional quality and scientific contribution to the field of Community Ecology.     In addition, we are honored to award an Honorable Mention to Aline Pereira Cruz for her thesis “Amerindian Legacies in the Subtropical Forests of South America” (under the supervision of Prof. Nivaldo Peroni), in recognition of the excellence of her research and the importance of the study for understanding cultural and ecological legacies.

    Uma abordagem inédita e holística sobre a resiliência da Floresta Amazônica desenvolvida por uma equipe de cientistas da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) e de outras instituições é destaque na revista Nature, um dos periódicos científicos mais relevantes do mundo. A pesquisa faz uma revisão de dados completa e traça cenários a partir do mapeamento de cinco elementos de stress que afetam a região: o aquecimento global, a chuva anual, a intensidade da sazonalidade das chuvas, a duração da estação seca e o desmatamento acumulado. Além disso, aponta caminhos possíveis para uma mudança de cenário que possa evitar o colapso. A estimativa é de que, nos próximos 25 anos, de 10% a 47% da Amazônia possam chegar a um ponto de não retorno, com transições inesperadas na paisagem.

    A pesquisa é liderada pelo cientista Bernardo Monteiro Flores, que faz pós-doutorado em Ecologia na UFSC, com supervisão da professora Marina Hirota, coautora do estudo. Além deles, Catarina Jakovac, do Departamento de Fitotecnia, e Carolina Levis, do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ecologia, também assinam o artigo, que conta com a autoria de cientistas renomados, incluindo um dos especialistas brasileiro em climatologia mais citados no mundo, Carlos Nobre.
